As university life in the UK is about to begin, many international students have already booked their flights and are gearing up for the journey. To help you with a smooth transition, here’s a comprehensive Student Apartment Check-in Guide for all the new students. Save and share with those who need it!
UK Student Apartment Check-in Guide
1. Before Moving In:
Documents you need to prepare:
Your passport
University acceptance letter
Bank payment proof/email confirmation that the accommodation has received your rent (Make sure the rent is paid before moving in.)
Accommodation contract
It’s advisable to make copies of these documents in case they get lost. Keep the originals with you during your journey to ensure smooth check-in procedures.
Schedule your check-in:
Contact the accommodation in advance and confirm your move-in time. Try to avoid late evenings or weekends. While check-ins are possible during off-hours, there might be no one available to assist if there are issues, which could cause inconvenience.
2.How to Find the Accommodation:
If you’re traveling to the accommodation by yourself after landing, make sure you have the full address and postal code written down, preferably in your phone’s notes. This way, you can show it directly to the driver if you’re taking a taxi.
UK address format is as follows:
Block B 110, Banex Ltd, 73 Kingsland Rd, London, E2 8AG
Block B 110: Block B, Room 110
Banex Ltd: Name of your accommodation
73 Kingsland Rd: Street name and number
London: City
E2 8AG: Postal code (In the UK, the postal code helps pinpoint the exact location.)
If you’ve pre-arranged an airport pickup, simply contact the driver ahead of time and you’ll be directly taken to the accommodation.
3.On Check-in Day:
Step 1: Arriving at the Accommodation
Upon arrival, go to the reception desk and approach the staff.
Say: "Hello, I’d like to check-in please" or simply "Check-in, please." If there’s no one at the desk, you can ring the bell or call the front desk number.
Present your passport and any required documents, such as the key collection pass generated after online check-in, or the QR code on your accommodation’s app (usually, a passport will suffice).
The receptionist will check your details and provide you with the key along with an inventory checking list.
The inventory checking list includes basic information about the apartment and instructions on how to use various facilities such as heating, Wi-Fi, and laundry machines. Be sure to read through it to familiarize yourself with your new home.
4. Room Check:
After check-in, don’t rush to unpack. First, inspect the room and check for any damages, such as broken lights, taps, furniture, or kitchen equipment. If you find any issues, report them to the management immediately.
5. Utilities (Water, Electricity, Gas, and Internet) Payments:
In the UK, student accommodations usually don’t include utility bills (bills) in the rent. After moving in, paying these bills is an essential step.
